Description and Reviews:
Taylor Fladgate, 1963
Vintage Port

Summary

Taylor Fladgate 1963 Vintage Port is one of the most legendary Ports of the twentieth century, produced in what is widely regarded as one of the greatest declared vintages of the modern era. Renowned for its remarkable structure and longevity, this wine has matured gracefully over more than six decades, developing extraordinary complexity while retaining the elegance and balance that define the house style of Taylor Fladgate.

Tasting Notes

Now showing a deep garnet colour with a soft tawny rim, the bouquet is intensely complex and beautifully evolved. Aromas of dried black fruits, figs and raisins intertwine with notes of cedar, tobacco, walnut and dark chocolate, alongside delicate hints of spice and orange peel.

On the palate the wine is wonderfully smooth and harmonious. Layers of mature fruit, dried plum, cocoa and roasted nuts unfold with remarkable depth. The once powerful tannins have softened into a silky texture, while a thread of freshness carries the wine through to a long, elegant and persistent finish.

Vintage Overview

The 1963 vintage is universally considered one of the greatest of the twentieth century in the Douro Valley. Ideal growing conditions and an excellent harvest produced wines of exceptional concentration, balance and longevity. Nearly all the major Port houses declared the vintage, and many of the wines—particularly those from Taylor Fladgate—have become benchmarks for mature Vintage Port.

Serving Suggestions

Serve at 16–18°C and decant carefully to remove natural sediment that forms during long bottle ageing. It pairs beautifully with blue cheeses such as Stilton, dark chocolate desserts, or can be savoured on its own as a remarkable after-dinner wine.

Cellaring

Fully mature and drinking beautifully now, but well-stored bottles can continue to offer pleasure for many years to come. Once opened, it should ideally be enjoyed within 1–2 days.
