Taylor Fladgate, 1965
Quinta de Vargellas Vintage Port
Description and Reviews:
Quinta de Vargellas is one of the Douro Valley’s most iconic vineyards and the historic backbone of Taylor Fladgate. Located in the remote eastern Douro, its steep, schist terraces produce wines of precision, structure, and longevity. In years when a full vintage is not declared—such as 1965—the estate’s best fruit is bottled as a single-quinta vintage, offering a purer expression of site.
Vargellas Ports are typically more linear, aromatic, and finely structured than the broader Taylor style, with hallmark notes of wild herbs, floral lift, and mineral tension. Over time, they evolve with remarkable grace, making older examples like 1965 compelling not for sheer power, but for their complexity, balance, and sense of place.
Appearance
Deep garnet core fading to a tawny-amber rim—fully mature, with beautiful oxidative development.
Nose
Layered and complex. Dried plum, fig, and blackcurrant lead, followed by dark chocolate, roasted nuts, and warm spice. Tertiary notes of cedar, leather, and orange zest bring elegance and age-derived nuance.
Palate
Silky and fully resolved. Rich flavours of prune, blackberry, and cherry glide into molasses, liquorice, and espresso tones. The tannins are softened but still provide a gentle framework, while fresh acidity keeps the wine lifted and alive.
Finish
Long, harmonious, and mellow. Lingering dried fruit, cocoa, and spice, with a graceful, warming persistence that speaks to its age and pedigree.
