Description and Reviews:
Taylor Fladgate 1987 Quinta de Vargellas Vintage Port is a beautifully mature single-quinta release from one of the Douro’s most iconic estates. While 1987 was not a universally declared vintage, Vargellas produced an outstanding wine, showcasing the vineyard’s hallmark intensity, purity and structure. After almost four decades of evolution, this Port has entered a superb drinking window, offering elegance and complexity in equal measure.
The nose is lifted and expressive, with aromas of dried blackberry, cherry liqueur, fig and plum compote. Notes of cedar, violets, exotic spice and a touch of dark chocolate emerge with aeration, giving the wine both depth and fragrance. Vargellas’ characteristic floral signature remains beautifully intact even at this age.
On the palate, the wine is smooth, refined and perfectly balanced, with softened tannins and flavours of dried fruits, sweet spice, cocoa and a hint of eucalyptus. The structure is still present but mellow, leading to a long, warming finish that showcases both the power of the vineyard and the finesse of mature Taylor Fladgate.
Food pairing: Excellent with Stilton, aged cheddar, walnuts, dark chocolate or enjoyed on its own as a contemplative after-dinner Port. Drinking beautifully now.
