1942 Port Vintage Report

This year was, despite WWII, declared by some shippers such as Graham's. Production was small due to continued post-war restrictions, but those wines which have been cared for are still drinking well now. These would make an excellent 80 year old wine gift for a birthday or anniversary this year.

Dow's Port, 1942

Vintage Port - capsule damaged and rewaxed - good label and level

A very rare wartime vintage.

Provenance:
No Dow vintages were formally declared during the war.
However it was common practice for shippers to bottle a small quantity of port to lay down. There was a shortage of part in the UK in the late 50's and the wine society brought up all of the bin ends of mature port - including some 1940's undeclared port. This bottle originates from the wine society purchase.

Graham's Port, 1942

Vintage Port (in neck stained label)

Declared by some shippers, despite the war, and in some cases declared and bottled in 1945 to celebrate Victory. First Vintage to be bottled exclusively in Portugal, rather than shipped in cask as was customary.

Little known, and production was small due to continued post-war restrictions, but well-cellared wines are still a pleasure.

Taylor's Port, 1942

Vintage Port

This is a very rare wartime vintage in excellent condition.

A very dry winter followed by a cold spring caused flowering to be late, but some rain in June brought the grapes forward. The vintage started generally on the 2nd September; weather uncertain from the 28th and on the whole dull and cool with slow fermentations.
