1979 Port Vintage Report

1979-portA Vintage Port from 1979 makes an excellent 44 year old wine gift for a 44th birthday or anniversary. Still drinking well, 1979 ports are part of a span of good vintages from 1977 to 1980. A very wet winter was followed by a dry hot summer and no rainfall from late June until 18th September. The crop was large and produced many quite good straight forward single-quinta wines that are now mature but will keep well for years.

Gold Award- International Wine Challenge

Kopke Port is the oldest port house. Established in 1638 by Nicolau Kopke and his son Cristiano, who came to Portugal as representatives of the Hanseatic League, the House has been run through the generations by several representatives of the Kopke family, obtaining an excellent reputation for its wines.

Review:
Intense amber coloured. Presents a complex and rich bouquet of aromas where stands out the dried fruits. On the taste it is distinct, balanced and harmonious. Tannins elegantly combined which persists in the delicious finish.

Messias, 1979

Quinta Cachao Vintage Port

A very rare bottle of Vintage Port from the good 1979 Vintage - these are the only bottles available in the UK and are a true rarity. These are exclusive to VWP and were taken directly from the Messias Cellars in Porto where they have been stored since original bottling.

The 1979 Messias Cachao port is fully mature with a tawny colour. This bottle was decanted 4 hours prior to tasting. On the nose there are notes of molasses, honey and butterscotch. On the pallet there is a good balance, slightly high acidity but the sweetness balances this out. Notes of walnut and hazelnut on the palate as well as a little coffee and molasses.

Graham's Port, 1979

Late Bottled Vintage Port (Magnum format 150cl)

Late Bottled Vintage port is from a single year. The wine ages 4-6 years in old oak casks (opposed to Vintage that ages 2-3). LBV fills the gap between the rubies and the vintage ports since a Ruby Port should be drunk quite young and a great Vintage Port may need 15 to 20 years to really open up and show its splendour. This led to the idea in the 1960s to age the wine 4 to 6 years in large casks before bottling it, thereby producing a wine with the style of a Vintage Port with its deep colour and concentration of fruit but with a more mature character caused by the longer ageing in wood.
