1984 Port Vintage Report
A 1984 Port would make an excellent 40 year old wine gift, whether for a birthday or anniversary. Although there was no declaration of vintage this year, some attractive single Quinta ports were produced. These bottles are by now fully mature but will keep for years. The 1984 vintage started off with a cold wet spring, with summer not really starting until June. The first three weeks of September were fine, hot and dry, but at the end of September the temperature dropped sharply and it never recovered. However, there was good weather in the final part of the harvest and the winemakers' skills were tested in order to produce a good wine. Some excellent examples of the winemakers' talent are around, such as Messias, Warre, Dow and Fonseca. Some excellent single-harvest Colheitas were also produced.

The NV +40 Year Old Tawny Porto is a field blend bottled in 2014 with 114 grams of residual sugar and a bar-top cork. Personally, I like the 30 slightly more, but there are some stylistic differences and they are both very fine. The 30 is livelier and crisper. However, this +40 is distinguished by that "+." About 5% to 10% of the juice is from the 1944. That adds a layer of mahogany and molasses that the 30 does not have. …

Quinta da Devesa

The NV 40 Year White Port is a field blend bottled in 2019 with a bar-top cork, 20% alcohol and 112 grams of sugar. It is mainly a blend this year of the 1967 and 1970 (although different casks than those used for the 1970 White Colheita this issue). This seems fresher and livelier than the last release I saw (the 2018, which was not quite the same blend of vintages—another good reason to pay attention to bottling dates with age-indicated Ports). …
