Cabral Port, 1871

Colheita Port, DOC Douro

A rare bottling of Cabral 1871 port. Bottled in the 1970's from cask. Tasted by Michael Broadbent in 2001 with the following comments "Pale tawny indicating many, possibly 50 years, in wood; slightly varnishy on the nose but still sweet and delicious."

This Port was bought from The Dower House, Tewkesbury and whilst they do not have labels and the capsules are plain, the port dates from 1871 (bottled in the 1970s); please ask for further details. One bottle from this collection was previously opened; the cork for which had the date of 1871 and Cabral which is Serafim Cabral of Quinta de Loueiro.

La Reserve College Cellars, 1871

La Reserve College Cellars Vintage Port, DOC Douro

The 1871 La Réserve College Cellars Vintage Port is an almost mythical bottle, representing more than 150 years of Douro winemaking history. Crafted just six years after the end of the American Civil War and during the reign of Queen Victoria, this wine comes from an era when Port was made entirely by hand—grapes foot-trodden in granite lagares and transported downriver by rabelo boats. Surviving examples of any 19th-century Vintage Port are rare; a bottle from 1871 in collectible condition is a true treasure, offering a direct, liquid connection to the Douro’s golden age.

In the glass, a Port of this age would likely display a deep mahogany-brown core shading to amber and green at the rim, a classic indicator of extreme maturity.

Quinta de Loureiro, 1871

Vinha Velha do Douro - Colheita Port 1871, DOC Douro

The 1871 Quinta de Loureiro *Vinha Velha do Douro* Colheita Port is an extraordinary and almost unimaginable rarity, representing over 150 years of Douro history. Produced from ancient vineyards (*vinha velha*) at a time when phylloxera was devastating much of Europe, this wine is a remarkable survivor from an era when Port was crafted entirely by hand—grapes foot-trodden in granite lagares, cask-aged in the estate’s cellars, and later bottled for long-term maturity. As a *Colheita*, it would have spent decades maturing in seasoned oak casks before bottling, slowly developing the profound complexity and elegance that only extended cask ageing can deliver.
