1963 Port Vintage Report

1963 vintage ports are the benchmark against which others are compared: the Vintage is considered to be legendary. Anyone born in 1963 has a wine for life. Cockburn, Croft, Dow, Fonseca, Graham, Quinta do Noval Nacional, Taylor and Warre all stand out amongst a uniformly excellent field of producers. The combination of a near-perfect growing season and temperate weather during the harvest made for this incredible vintage - nearly all the shippers produced supremely balanced and well-structured wines for a full-on declaration. Ports from this year never fail to impress with their essential three components of fruit, tannin and elegance. Ageing supremely and retaining their youth, these ports often appear to be younger than they actually are! 1963 Port wines make and incredible wine gift for a birthday or anniversary.

Warre's Vintage Port, 1963

Vintage Port
Bottled & shipped by Hedges & Butler Ltd

Medium-deep garnet with a clear amber rim, showing maturity but still vibrant in the core.

Nose:
Beautifully evolved bouquet of dried red fruits, figs, and dates, layered with notes of cigar box, walnuts, orange peel, and a gentle lift of rose petal. Subtle spice—clove and cinnamon—adds depth.

Palate:
Silky and harmonious on the palate. The structure is still impressively intact with soft, integrated tannins and a lovely acidity that keeps the sweetness in balance. Flavours of stewed cherries, prune, and black tea unfold, leading into notes of mocha and aged wood. The wine lingers with a refined, nutty complexity and a whisper of eucalyptus.

Ferreira, 1963

Vintage Port

Ferreira Vintage Port 1963 is a magnificent example from one of the greatest Port vintages of the 20th century. Bottles from 1963 are increasingly rare, and Ferreira’s offering is particularly admired for its elegance and purity.

The bouquet is wonderfully aromatic, showing lifted notes of dried figs, cherries, orange peel and plum compote. Layers of cedar, tobacco, warm spice and a touch of cocoa emerge with aeration, revealing the complexity that long bottle ageing brings.
