Taylor Fladgate

taylors-vintage-portTaylor's Port has a three hundred year tradition focusing solely on its port wines, finding the very best methods of production and refining them to produce some of the best examples in existence.

Taylor's three iconic port wine estates, located in the best parts of the Douro Valley - Terra Feita, Vargellas and Junco - encompass a huge area and various different styles of wine. Each estate is distinct from the others, with different strengths and styles to complement each other brilliantly. It’s partly because of this that the House is rated so highly, often known as the one to beat when it comes to vintage ports; with their iconic blends of the very best from each estate, a bottle of Taylor’s vintage port is always unique and invariably among the best available. It is for this reason that theirs are some of the most sought-after and expensive ports in the world.

Taylor’s is undeniably one of the highest quality producers of port available and has centuries of experience with which to back that up – remaining the benchmark for many vintages, any bottle of theirs is sure to go down well!

Taylor Fladgate, 1977

Vintage Port

The 1977 Taylor's Vintage Port is an incredible wine from an outstanding vintage. Great plum red, vibrant. Fresh nose, clean fruit with delicate floral notes. A wine with great complexity of fruit – berry and spice, dense, luscious and concentrated, yet with a soft, delicate finish which belies the inner strength.

Reviews:
Robert Parker writes.... "This house must certainly be the Latour of Portugal. Their ports are remarkably backward yet still impressive when young. Of all the vintage ports, those of Taylor need the longest time to mature and even when fully mature seem to have an inner strength and firmness that keep them going for decades.

Quinta de Vargellas Vintage Port Oporto Bottled

This Taylor's Vintage Port from the good 1969 vintage is mature now. This is an excellent choice for both enthusiasts and collectors, offering a taste of the exceptional craftsmanship and terroir of the Douro Valley.

Tasting notes
Lovely tawny colour with a brick hue. The nose shows violets and sweet cherry with hints of wintergreen. On the palate it may not be as sweet as the earlier Ports from the 60s, but that is very much a good thing. Improved with air time, and by the end could almost detect some rich and sweet stewed fruits and Christmas spices balanced by the warming alcohol.

Quinta de Vargellas-Vintage Port
Oporto bottled

Perfumed, elegant and very attractive on the nose. Lively, tannic and massively fruity in the mouth. Lots of mid-palate activity, really attractive. Sweet with soft tannins and with a strong core of acidity that just makes the mouth water uncontrollably. A big but hot aftertaste with lots of black licorice dominating a long length. Very very enjoyable.

The 1948 Taylor's has a strong tawny colour. On the nose there was a wonderful coffee, chocolate and tobacco. With an alluring herbal aroma. There is Vintage Port and then there is the 1948 Taylor Fladgate. It remains a monumental Port that towers over the 20th century. Nineteen forty-eight is perhaps one of the lesser-known declarations compared to 1945 and 1963, although nine houses declared that year.
