Sandeman

sandeman-vintage-port
The famous image of "The Don" makes this the most well known brand of port in the world. The image was commissioned in 1928 by George Massiot Brown.

The company was founded in 1790 by George Sandeman, and today, his descendent another George Sandeman manages the brand. After a spell in the doldrums under Seagram the company has blossomed under the ownership of Sogrape. Under the stewardship of the head winemaker Luis Sotamayor the company has focused on quality and has produced some very good Vintage ports from 1997 onwards. The 2011 Vintage Port is outstanding. The recently released Quinta do Siexo (Single Quinta) bridges the gap in the range between the very good LBV's and the Vintage Port in years that are not declared.

50 Year Old Tawny Port
***95 Points- GOLD- Decanter 2023***

Beautiful pale tawny in colour. The 50-Year-Old Tawny is exceptionally pronounced and complex in aroma profile. Intense aromas of dried fruits, roasted walnuts, toffee and spice burst out of the glass. Velvety smooth on the palate, with a bright acidity keeping the decadent flavours on the straight and narrow and all culminating in a deliciously lingering finish.

There are few more iconic images in the world of wine than the ‘Don’, the logo created for the Sandeman family in 1928 by George Massiot Brown. The cape was modelled on the attire worn by university students in Porto, while the wide-brimmed hat was a nod to the family’s presence in Jerez.

About Sandeman
Sandeman’s history is a testament to its enduring legacy in the wine world, combining tradition with innovation to maintain its prestigious position in the market. Sandeman was founded in 1790 by George Sandeman, a young Scotsman who began trading in port and sherry wines in London. He borrowed £300 from his father to start his business. By 1795, Sandeman had established himself as a successful wine merchant, and his business began to expand rapidly.

Sandeman, 1950

Vintage Port
Embossed capsule | White plain label

Color: Dark tawny with some red left.
Nose: Sweet Christmas spices. Rich, round sugar. Turpentine.
Palate: Some tannins, edgy. On the dry side for Port (which is typical to me for Sandeman). Decent fruit.
Finish: Medium length. Finish seems younger than the Port's age.

*** Exceptional Provenance ***

Vintage Wine and Port have secured a few ultra-rare bottles of 1968 Sandeman's Port. These bottles are of exceptional provenance - they are library stock released exclusively to VWP from the Sandeman Cellars in Oporto.

Tasted by our wine buyer at the Sandeman 20 Vintage Tasting November 2013. "Tawny rim; good nose, some cigar, spice and chocolate, dried fruit. On the palate, ripe and sweet not quite in tune but still quite opulent with integrated tannins. Excellent finish - my first tasting of a '68 and quite a surprise for a generally undeclared year. (Tony Carter, November 2013) - 92 Points (Outstanding).

*** 93 Points for the Love of Port ***

These bottles were recently acquired from Sandeman's cellars in Oporto as part of their historic library stock. They have been specially relabelled by Sandeman to mark their 50th Anniversary.

Reviews:
93 Points Roy Hersch: "There is a first time for everything. This gentle giant is one of the very best of the Ports I have had from the lackluster 1967 vintage, which managed to produce a few very well-made VPs. The Sandeman is still in great shape. Due to the lighting it is impossible to tell the color. The aromatics dance out of the glass with ultra-potent, sweet violet and floral notes with a hint of mocha.

Sandeman, 1963

Vintage Port
** 96/100 - Wine Spectator **

The Sandeman 1963 Vintage Port stands as a benchmark for classic Port from one of the most legendary vintages of the 20th century. Produced in the heart of the Douro Valley by one of Portugal’s most iconic houses, this wine has matured gracefully for over six decades, offering a remarkable window into the craftsmanship of traditional vintage Port. The 1963 declaration was unanimous across major producers, and Sandeman’s bottling remains one of the standout examples from that historic year.

Now showing its full maturity, the wine reveals a beautifully evolved character. In the glass, it presents a tawny-brick hue with glimmers of amber at the rim.

Vintage Port, DOC Douro
Very Top Shoulder, Excellent capsule, Good provenance

From the excellent 1935 Vintage, Bottled to commemorate George V Jubilee. The port is tawny with some red in colour. Showing little on the nose, perhaps some hints of concentrated redcurrant. Smooth and concentrated on entry; full bodied and with good weight. Blossoms beautifully in the mouth, develops and grows. Explodes on the aftertaste with huge fruit flavours dominating - mature and sweet. Incredible finish! An astonishing wine. After 5½ hours in the glass this had even developed hints of tannins!

Sandeman, 1934

Sandeman 1934, DOC Douro
Neck label
Bottled in 1936 by Findlater, Mackie & Co Ltd, Hove

It all started in 1790 when the 25-year-old son of a Scottish prosperous cabinetmaker asked for a 300£ loan from his father to set up as a wine merchant in London.
This ambitious young man was George Sandeman, the founder of Sandeman, who ended up establishing one of the world’s leading Port and Sherry wine businesses.

From early on Sandeman specialised in these two great Iberian fortified wines and, following a usual practice in those days, began trading not from own offices but from Tom’s Coffee house, on Birchin Lane, London. Business was agreed on a ‘gentleman’s word’ and George soon gained an impeccable reputation, characteristic of The House of Sandeman to today.

Gentle on the palate, with soft, sweet raspberries with a bit of birch sap on the late palate. Fabulous development and complexity. Lovely strawberry jam, then a strong lime acidity that finally finishes with sticky strawberry. 93/100." AHB The Port Forum 2013.
