2009 Port Vintage Report

2009-wine-gifts

Ports from 2009 make an excellent 11 year old wine gift for a birthday or anniversary. The 2009 Port was declared as a vintage by the Taylor Fladgate Partnership covering Taylor, Fonseca and Croft - it will be remembered as a year of low yields, which produced wines of massive density and scale. This was partly the result of a small amount of fruit produced across all grape varieties, as well as the very dry summer during which there was no rainfall from July through to harvest time in September.

Fonseca Vintage Port
Description: Very deep purple black with violet highlights. As would be expected of a Fonseca Vintage Port, the first impression on the nose is of a powerful detonation of blackberry, cassis, strawberry and woodland fruit. These exuberant berry aromas are seasoned with notes of coffee, treacle and spice and surrounded by a fragrant balsamic aura of gumcistus and mint. The intense fruit flows through the palate like a thick blackcurrant coulis.

Kopke Port, 2009

Quinta Santa Luiz Vintage Port

Kopke Port is the oldest port house. Established in 1638 by Nicolau Kopke and his son Cristiano, who came to Portugal as representatives of the Hanseatic League, the House has been run through the generations by several representatives of the Kopke family, obtaining an excellent reputation for its wines.

Vintage or “bottle-aged” ports must receive approval of the Port Wine Institute to declare a vintage of recognized quality. Then, the entire vintage must be bottled between the second and third year. Since it improves in the bottle, it maintains its red color and red fruit flavors. It often takes 10 or more years to smooth the tannins and develop to its full potential,

Niepoort Port, 2009

Late Bottled Vintage Port - Half Bottle

This is perhaps the most iconic of our Ports. Dirk Niepoort calls it the "younger brother" of the Vintage Port, once the origin of the grapes and vinification methods are identical. Both are made ??from a selection of full-bodied wines of high quality, produced in a single year. The time this wine spends in large wooden vats ageing (4 years) allows it to mature and settle down, being ready to drink young and right after bottling.
To fully enjoy the qualities it has to offer, we recommend decanting before serving.

Ideal with soft cheese, smooth blue cheese, dark chocolate desserts or a pepper steak.

Quinta do Vesuvio Vintage Port, 2009

Vintage Port

An outstanding 2009 vintage Port Wine from Quinta do Vesuvio.

Reviews

"As ever, Vesuvio is packed with its generous, opulent ripe fruit, showing richness, dense flavors, layers of jam and sweetness with a hint of caramel flavors. This is a Port for indulgence, ripe, rich and packed with flavor." - 93 / 100 Points, Wine Enthusiast.

Quinta do Vesúvio is situated far upriver in the Douro Superior, 120 kilometres from Portugal’s Atlantic coast and only 45 kilometres from the border with Spain. The Quinta’s special reputation for producing outstanding wines goes back into the nineteenth century, when the Viscount of Villa Maior wrote, “All this wine is made scrupulously and to perfection… this Quinta was made as if for princes…”.

Taylor's Port, 2009

Vintage Port SINGLE 75cl bottle

95 Points - Wine Journal

Reviews:Going back and forth, the Taylor's 2009 has a lighter nose than the 2007 with precise dark cherry, Seville orange, fresh fig and a hint of scorched soil. The palate is full-bodied packed with ripe black cherries, fresh fig and white pepper; very harmonious and focused although I feel that the 2007 has a little more depth and persistency. Very pretty and very pure, this Taylor's may well put on weight with a couple of years in bottle and merit a higher mark. Tasted May 2011.
Score: 95 Neal Martin, Wine Advocate, June 2011
