1967 Port Vintage Report

Making a great wine gift for any birthday or anniversary, the 1967 port vintage is a very good vintage that was somewhat overshadowed by the exceptional 1966. It was declared by about 15 shippers. The 1967 ports showed well at recent tastings; they have good structure and elegant fruit and will keep for many years to come.

Reviews:
Lovely dark caramel colour, with some truffle and tea notes, edges of olive and green fruits (fig). The maturity on the palate is obvious, again with fabulous sweetness and brown sugar richness, Muscovado and walnuts, but the hallmark of the fresh orange and lemon acidity plays against that and the coffee and walnut cake sweetness and richness.

These bottles have impeccable provenance having been held in Krohn's own cellars since bottling. They were imported by VWP in December 2016.

The palate displays a smooth, silky texture and finishes with a burst of rich mellow flavour. The finish is long and elegant. A, finely constituted port that is drinking well now but with careful cellaring it will hold for a few years.

Pocas, 1967

Colheita (Single Harvest) Port

Vintage & Background
The 1967 vintage in the Douro yielded grapes that, when transformed into Colheita Port, reveal both richness and elegance. A Colheita is a single-harvest tawny fortified wine that ages oxidatively in oak casks before bottling — in this case around 40 years in wood before release. Poças has a long tradition in Port production, and this 1967 represents a rare mature expression of historic Douro terroir and craftsmanship.

Appearance & Nose
In the glass the wine shows a deep amber-gold with antique hues, typical of extended oxidative aging. The bouquet is complex and inviting, with aromas of dried fruit — fig, date, apricot — interwoven with honeyed notes, citrus peel, and spice.

Quinta do Noval, 1967

Vintage Port

A rare bottle of Quinta do Noval 1967 Vintage Port

Tasted at the Port Forum in 2017.
Review:
A lovely cherry red colour, 40% opaque. Another wonderful nose, with sweet cherry and mature spiced fruit. Thick in texture and flavoured with sweet red apples combine to give an impressive palate presence. Awesome balance and a terrific palate. Fragrant fruit drives the aftertaste, followed by a delicious cherry finish with a great length. This is a very fine vintage port and was my wine of the night. 94/100. Decanted 13 hours. AHB.

Rocha's, 1967

Colheita Port

Rochas, 1967 Colheita Port

The 1967 harvest in the Douro Valley produced wines of notable concentration and balance, well suited to long oxidative ageing. While the year was not widely declared for Vintage Port, it proved particularly successful for Colheita Ports — wines from a single harvest that mature slowly in seasoned oak casks for many decades before bottling.

Rochas 1967 Colheita Port has spent many years ageing in wood, developing the remarkable depth and complexity that only long cask maturation can provide. The bouquet reveals layers of dried fig, raisin and caramelised orange peel, accompanied by notes of toasted almond, walnut and warm spice.

Sandeman, 1967

Vintage Port
(Library stock from Sandeman cellars, Oporto)

*** 93 Points for the Love of Port ***

These bottles were recently acquired from Sandeman's cellars in Oporto as part of their historic library stock. They have been specially relabelled by Sandeman to mark their 50th Anniversary.

Reviews:
93 Points Roy Hersch: "There is a first time for everything. This gentle giant is one of the very best of the Ports I have had from the lackluster 1967 vintage, which managed to produce a few very well-made VPs. The Sandeman is still in great shape. Due to the lighting it is impossible to tell the color. The aromatics dance out of the glass with ultra-potent, sweet violet and floral notes with a hint of mocha.
