Taylor's Port

taylors-vintage-port

Taylor, Fladgate, & Yeatman (often simply Taylor Fladgate) is one of the largest port wine houses. Founded in 1692 in Vila Nova de Gaia,
Portugal, it is also one of the oldest. The house invented the style of late-bottled vintage port. Taylor Fladgate's vintage ports are some of the most sought-after and expensive ports in the world.

In addition to Vintage Port, Taylor's has also enjoyed considerable success with its Quinta de Vargellas, under which label Vintage wine is made in good years that have not been declared. The range has been developed with Quinta de Terra Feita in the Pinhão valley and Quinta do Junco, Vila Nova da Gaia and Xisto.

The Port wines are typically closed and austere when young; it is only with adequate ageing that they loosen up and offer their subliminal qualities.

Vintage Port MAGNUMS

Ruby highlights surviving in the colour. Deep, intense, Burgundian richness. At first the spirit is rather overpowering. Then dark chocolate starts appearing, followed by herbal, gum cistus, licorice, cigar box, leathery quality really comes through in the mouth and a slightly medicinal character. Medium length.

This house must certainly be the Latour of Portugal. Their ports are remarkably backward yet still impressive when young. Of all the vintage ports, those of Taylor need the longest time to mature and even when fully mature seem to have an inner strength and firmness that keep them going for decades.

Special Quinta Port Vargellas

- Rare bottling!

Decant: 3 hours - Bottled by Corney & Barrow. David Guimaraens reports that this could have been a single quinta port from Vargellas but that the TFP records are unclear. Very pale, very light in colour - almost the same colour as a white colheita; maybe 10% opaque. Very little on the nose, perhaps just a touch of mace. Gentle sugary sweetness on entry; a good volume of chocolate and raisin tones on the mid-palate. Lovely aftertaste, soft and floral with modest volume and lots of heat on the finish, which eventually turns into a herb lemon grass.

Taylor's Port, 1948

Vintage Port

100 points - Neil Martin Vinous.

The 1948 Taylor's has strong tawny colour's. On the nose there was a wonderful coffee, chocolate and tobacco. With an alluring herbal aroma. On the palate this port has a luscious feel on the palate and incredibly complex layers of caramel, chocolate and coffee. This continued with an incredible long persistent finish. VWP tasting March 2017

BY NEAL MARTIN | MAY 7, 2018

There is Vintage Port and then there is the 1948 Taylor Fladgate. It remains a monumental Port that towers over the 20th century. Nineteen forty-eight is perhaps one of the lesser-known declarations compared to 1945 and 1963, although nine houses declared that year.

Taylor's Port, 1945

Vintage Port (Damaged labels levels in neck)

Remarkably dark and well-preserved in color, this wine’s dark brick-garnet hue suggests a powerful, youthful wine. Complex aromas of flowers, mint, cherry and plum also carry hints of spice cake. On the palate, there’s ample spice, with plenty of power and tannin still evident on the long, long finish. Drink or hold.

Taylor's Port, 1942

Vintage Port

This is a very rare wartime vintage in excellent condition.

A very dry winter followed by a cold spring caused flowering to be late, but some rain in June brought the grapes forward. The vintage started generally on the 2nd September; weather uncertain from the 28th and on the whole dull and cool with slow fermentations.

Vintage Port Mid Shoulder
Was £1150 | Now £650

Shipper Edward Sheldon Ltd. Capsule marked 1924.

‘Just a notch deeper in colour than the 1912. The nose is divine: intense, beautifully defined, very Taylor’s. Quite spicy, dried orange peel, cigar box, a touch of sandalwood. Gains perfume in the glass but after 30 minutes has gone back into its shell. The palate is full-bodied, very concentrated, more viscous than the 1912. Notes of ginger, apricot, fig, licorice. Lovely ripe orange-tinged finish that goes on and on. Very sensuous; beautiful poise on the fruit.’

Tasting notes
Deep purple black with a narrow magenta rim. High notes of pure, intense woodland fruit with lively accents of green apple, fresh plum and raspberry. Around this core of bright, singing fruit is a heady aura of gumcistus and wine herbs. On a deeper register, exotic notes of cedarwood and jasmine provide an additional dimension of complexity. The wine has an attractive leanness and muscularity with sinewy, linear tannins that integrate seamlessly into the mid palate and then re-emerge to hold the wine in a confident grip. Energised by a racy acidity, the intense berry flavours continue to build into the long finish.

Quinta de Vargellas Vintage Port, 1 x 75cl Single bottle.

Taylor’s has announced that it will bottle a Quinta de Vargellas Vintage Port from 2015. Announcing the release, Taylor’s Managing Director, Adrian Bridge, said: ‘The 2015 harvest has produced an excellent Quinta de Vargellas Vintage Port, showing all the balance and elegance that are the hallmarks of the property. Although the 2015’s are already expressive and appealing on the nose, they also have the structure and completeness to allow them to hold up extremely well in bottle.’ Taylor’s wine maker, David Guimaraens, commented: ‘The condition of the crop was exceptionally healthy throughout the 2015 harvest, although the dry year meant that yields were relatively low.

SCORES & TASTING NOTES

Deep ruby-black core with a narrow purple-red rim. A classic Vargellas nose, fine, elegant and poised with a linear surge of pure singing, woodland infused with a plummy freshness and hints of citrus and fresh quince. A subtle spiciness, with hints of nutmeg, anise and cacao, emerges from behind the fruit. The tell-tale Vargellas floral scent is more reminiscent of jasmine than the signature aura of violets and mingles with the minty, resiny notes of wild herbs. A discreet minerality provides an attractively firm edge. Typically of Vargellas, the palate is supported by taut, sinewy tannins and the grippy finish delivers a burst of clean, fresh berry fruit flavour.

This dense backdrop is overlaid with subtle notes of tea, rose petal, tyme and exotic wood with an attractive grapy freshness emerging as the nose develops. As usual with the Vargellas, the nose shows exceptional purity and resolution but is seductive in its complexity.

Quinta de Terra Feita Vintage Port

Quinta de Terra Feita's vines have been supplying Taylor Fladgate with the highest quality grapes for over a hundred years.

This famous old estate is one of the most substantial properties in, what is considered by many, to be the finest wine producing area of the Upper Douro. The Quinta is situated on the western slopes of the Pinhao River Valley. With over 61 hectares under vine it produces 1,300 hectoliters of port wine.

The wines of Terra Feita are all produced in traditional granite lagares on the property. This ancient method still produces the best quality wine; the gentle action of the foot carefully extracts the maximum colour, fruit and tannins from the wine.

Reviews:
100 Points – Wine Spectator
"In a word, superb. It's full-bodied, moderately sweet and incredibly tannic, but there's amazing finesse and refinement to the texture, not to mention fabulous, concentrated aromas of raspberries, violets and other flowers. Perhaps the greatest Taylor ever, it's better than either the '92 or the '70, though it's very like the '70 in structure."

This classically made, opaque purple-coloured wine is crammed with black fruits (blueberries and cassis). It reveals high tannin and a reserved style, but it is enormously constituted with massive body, a formidable mid-palate, and exceptional length.
