Description and Reviews:
The 1974 Taylor Quinta de Vargellas is a vintage port from the renowned Taylor's wine house. While 1974 was not declared a vintage year for Taylor's overall, the Quinta de Vargellas estate often produces exceptional single-quinta vintage ports even in years that are not widely declared. Produced from grapes exclusively from the Quinta de Vargellas estate, these wines showcase the unique terroir of the vineyard.
Tasting notes Medium intense colour with slight orange tinge at the rim. Nose of wood, anise, deep berry notes, faint clove and lots more. Rich mouthfeel w/slight woodiness, rich dried fruits of cherry, blackberry, Plum and dates. Big in the mouth with a strong alcohol finish. this kept developing for at least two hours showing candied cherries later on. I was really surprised how big this wine was at 50yrs old. Maybe not the most complex port but definitely delicious. Cellar tracker review.
Serving and food pairing Decanting is essential for a vintage port of this age. Allow it to breathe for a couple of hours to fully open up the aromas and flavours.
Glassware: Use a white wine glass to concentrate the aromas. Pairing: This port would pair wonderfully with aged cheeses, especially blue cheese, as well as with desserts featuring chocolate or dried fruits. It can also be enjoyed on its own as a dessert wine.
