1945 Port Vintage Report
The 1945 port vintage was the first end-of-war vintage. It was a superb quality five-star vintage, although the quantity produced was small. 22 shippers declared the vintage, with Cockburn being the only major abstention. The ports are now very rare but are still drinking well today, making them an excellent 76 year old wine gift for a birthday or anniversary this year.

Croft Port, 1945
Vintage Port - Oporto Bottled
Level in neck | Bin soiled label
A much deeper colour than the ’42 as one would expect. Quite limpid for a 62-year old with a lovely, elegant nose of ginger, leather, figs, almond and black cherries in the background. Very refined with a sedate feel to it. The palate is just sublime with perfect acidity, rich and decadent for Croft and in a sense, riper than the ’35 thanks to the Indian summer? Powerful, spicy and almost decadent towards the finish with wild honey, heather, fig, raisin and liquorice. Very long – this ’45 flirts with perfection. A gorgeous ’45 port.

Gorgeous, glorious and rich. Dark ruby in color, with an amber edge. Full-bodied and wonderfully sweet, with intense aromas of raisin, raspberry and cherry and a long, long finish. Very rich and very fine. I underrated this years ago.--Dow vertical. (JS) (12/1999)

Niepoort Port, 1945
Vintage Port
A rare example of the Niepoort 1945 Vintage.
Rated 97 points from the Wine Spectator (in 1990)… 'Another Port shipper once mistook this extraordinary wine for one 15 years younger. It is very youthful, with caressing sweet fruit flavors. Medium garnet with a ruby center, blackberry, black pepper and smoke aromas, medium-bodied, with sweet blackberry.'
Voted as the best of the Niepoort vintages by thePortForum.com - Review: 60% opaque, red. Wonderful mature VP, still with structure. Mint and cherry, though fruit fading. Fabulous. Widely acclaimed, and overwhelmingly voted, wine of the night

Warre's Vintage Port, 1945
Vintage Port
The 1945 Warre is a legendary port from an exceptional year. These bottles were acquired from a close relative of the Symington family where they were well-cellared from original purchase.
From the Wine Spectator…'This is like a deliciously fresh bowl of fruit. Medium red-ruby with a garnet rim, a nose of cranberries and cherries, full-bodied, with sweet cranberry flavors and a lovely balance of round tannins. A wonderful glass of Port.' (Jan. 1989)
Broadbent
Variable notes, including one framboise-scented, (in 1964), one woody. Showing marvellously well at the 1989 tasting of '45s in Florida: beautiful colour, lively, lovely gradation. …

Fonseca Port, 1945
Vintage Port
Level very top shoulder, embossed capsule, fragile label
Renowned as one of the great Port producers, Fonseca's vintage wine is among the best in virtually every widely declared vintage. The house style is flamboyantly rich, even exotic, and the wines are usually sweeter and fuller in body than those from most other producers.
The 1945 Fonseca is a top wine from one of the top vintages of the 20th century, a hot year with low yield. In the glass, the gorgeous wine has bittersweet chocolate on the aroma as well as surprising fruit; a dollop of chocolate permeated the array of flavors while the tannic structure was richer and rounder than the Taylor ’48. …

Tasting Notes
Graham's 1945 is consistently, in my experience, the best of that magnificent vintage. ... The 1945 was fully mature, amber rim, pungent yet fragrant, still sweet, fabulous flavour and interminable length. An appropriate, much appreciated five-star Port. Score: 5 Stars

The Quinta do Noval from da Silva is a rare piece of history from the majestic 1945 Vintage.
Quinta do Noval Vintage Port wine is characterized by its purity of fruit and a fine and delicate quality that is typical of the estate's wines in general, but which finds its most notable and lasting expression in Vintage Ports.
Balance, harmony, finesse and elegance are the characteristics of our great Vintage Port wines, which are declared only when we believe that the year produced a batch, even if small, worthy of the Quinta do Noval seal.

Ramos Pinto, 1945
Vintage Port
Reviews and tasting notes for the 1945 Ramos Pinto Vintage Port
"Reddish-brown in colour, mature in appearance; 50% opaque. Nice on the nose, fresh and with acidic rhubarb tones. Empty entry despite the texture, but some attractive burnt toffee and marmalade on the mid palate. A nice balancing acidity on the palate but this does burn slightly on the aftertaste. The finish is slightly burnt, but with very pleasant mature fruit; a touch short compared to the other ports shown alongside but a large volume and mouthfilling. 91/100." AHB The Port Forum

Taylor Fladgate, 1945
Vintage Port
The Taylor 1945 is remarkably dark and well-preserved in colour, this wine’s dark brick-garnet hue suggests a powerful, youthful wine. Complex aromas of flowers, mint, cherry and plum also carry hints of spice cake. On the palate, there’s ample spice, with plenty of power and tannin still evident on the long, long finish. A true wine legend.
