1947 Port Vintage Report

The 1947 port vintage was outstanding. An outstanding vintage that produced elegant and delicate ports and which was declared by only 11 shippers. Well cellared wines are drinking well and will last for many more years. Very popular in the wine starved 1950's which is why little remains.

Butler Nephew Vintage Port, 1947

Vintage Port (Excellent condition)

Review on cellar Tracker.
"I loved the 1947 Butler Nephew & Co Vintage Port. It had a floral, spicy nose with pure clean spirit. It tasted of chocolate and cherries and was full and plump. Balance was superb and it was so fresh and clean on the finish."

Cockburn Port, 1947

Vintage Port Bottled by Cockburn and Campbell

Mid red in colour, paling on the rim. Alcohol protruding on the nose over a lovely mixed spice and aniseed. Lovely sweet raisins and dried cranberries in the mouth intermingled with licorice root. Very complex in the mouth. The aftertaste is sweet, pleasant, but short. 90/100 AHB (The Port Forum)

Dow's Port, 1947

Vintage Port

From the outstanding 1947 vintage, this stunning port is deep and rich with nice weight and a dry liquorice finish. Light tawny color with spicy aromas and a hint of balsam, but the palate delivers very sweet, smoky plum, herbs and mint characteristics. Well balanced and with good length on the finish.

Fonseca Port, 1947

Single Quinta Vintage Port

This is a special treat at the end of the evening. Murky copper coloured with a rich intense raisoned nose with bay leaf and hints of brandy butter and caramel. The palate is full and powerful but with a surprising freshness and lift. Dense and flavoursome with rich dark coffee, cloves, chocolate and toffee apple flavours. Absolutely lovely with endless length.

Tuke Holdsworth, 1947

Vintage Port

On the nose chocolate, butter scotch, toffee, coffee, roses and tea lead to a full bodied, soft tannin palate with a lovely balancing acidity. A superb rare port from 1947!

Tuke Holdsworth was the brand name of the old shipper Hunt Roope & Teage, the former owners of Quinta da Eira Velha. The company was sold to Ferreira in 1956 but the quinta was retained by the family and from that point it supplied wines to Martinez and Cockburn.
