2011 Port Vintage Report

All of the major port houses have now declared the 2011 vintage as being of exceptional quality. The avalanche of declarations started with Sogrape, owners of Sandeman and Ferreira, followed by Symington, the company that owns Dows, Graham, Warre, Smith Woodhouse and Cockburn and then Taylor Fladgate, owners of the Fonseca, Croft and Taylor's brands. According to Charles Symington, "The 2011 Vintage Ports are characterised by an unusual combination of elegance with power and structure. Whereas “elegant” usually implies lighter-bodied, the 2011s have fantastic aromas and great elegance but are big wines - not an easy balance to achieve." These ports would be an excellent 8 year old wine gift for an anniversary this year, reaching their peak between 2020 and 2050, perhaps even onwards.

2011 Croft, 2011

Vintage Port (in Gift Box with Decanting Funnell)

** 95 Points - James Suckling **

The near perfect viticultural conditions which prevailed in the Douro Valley in 2011 was bound to allow for great things in Croft's highly regarded Quinta da Roêda. This Quinta always forms the core around which Croft craft their Vintage Port blend, yet in this excellent year all of the blend's components have been sourced from here, producing a scented, exotic and lusciously opulent style. In the words of wine-maker David guimareans, the high perfomance of Quinta da Roêda gave this vintage 'an additional layer of density and depth of flavour' with silky, integrated tannins and powerful grip on the finish.

Burmester Port, 2011

Vintage Port - Single Bottle in Presentation Box

*** 93 points Wine Spectator ***
88-90 Points - Robert Parker

The 2011 Burmester Vintage Port is, according to Kim Marcus (Wine Spectator), an "intensely fruity" wine with great complexity and concentration, notes of "raspberries, black plums and wild cherries." This wine offers a "refined finish" with a touch of "dark chocolate, tea and brown sugar." It is a wine that, according to the critic, is ready to drink but has the ability to continue ageing during the next three decades.

Reviews: "The 2011 J W Burmester has a sweeter, comparatively floral bouquet with open, generous scents of ripe dates, black plum and raisin that need to show a little more restraint.

Burmester Port, 2011

Vintage Port 6x75cl Bottle Case

Since the beginning of the 20th century, all Vintages are bottled in the cellars at Vila Nova de Gaia during the second spring after the harvest. Produced according to the traditional method of foot treading in classic stone "lagares", a Vintage is only declared in years of outstanding and exceptional quality.

The association of Vintage Port with a mature blue cheese such as Stilton is one of the great classic food and wine combinations. The soft buttery texture, mellow character and piquancy of the cheese are perfectly matched by the powerfully majestic flavours of the Vintage Port. Other blue, buttery, mellow and slighty piquant cheeses to consider would be: Cashel Blue, Roquefort, Gorgonzola and Saint Agur Blue.

Calem Port, 2011

Vintage Port Single Bottle in individual presentation box as illustrated

*** 93-95 Points Robert Parker ***
*** 92 Points Wine Spectator ***

With exceptional 92 points, 2011 Cálem Vintage Port is a wine that, according to Kim Marcus, of Wine Spectator, reveals flavours of "black plums, blackberries and cherries" that "vibrate on the palate" with intense notes of "dark chocolate and spices." This Vintage Port suggests a "powerful control", the result of nobles and "structured tannins", extending the finish. According to Kim Marcus, this is a Vintage Port that follows the "traditional style of wines that need time," and recommends drinking it ideally after 2018.

Cockburn Port, 2011

Vintage Port

Distinctive fragrant esteva (rockrose) nose, indicative of the substantial Touriga Nacional contribution to the final blend. In the mouth there is a wonderful, pure fruit quality (red cherries and strawberry) denoting the fresh acidity, which underpins the wine's structure and balance. A wine of great finesse and poise.

Cockburn's 2011 Vintage Port pairs wonderfully with chocolate desserts, such as chocolate mousse, creamy blue cheeses like Stilton or Roquefort.

Reviews
""Great nose here with flowers, leaves and a wet earth character. Full body, lightly sweet with a massive finish. This is muscular, toned and intense.

Croft Port, 2011

Vintage Port DOUBLE MAGNUM 3.0L

Deep purple black colour. The complex seductive nose has the archetypal Croft opulence but displays impressive depth, background and reserves of aroma. A rich, powerful fruitiness provides the backdrop for heady scents of blossom and rock rose. Luscious ripe berry fruit flavour surges though the palate. The wine’s velvety texture is underpinned by taut, muscular, perfectly integrated tannins, which provide stamina with an attractive firmness and vigour to the finish. More virile and structured than some recent Vintages from this classic house, the 2011 nevertheless displays all the rich ripe fruitiness and exotic scented character associated with the Croft house style.

Grahams Port, 2011

Vintage Port

The Graham’s 2011 Vintage Port is a profound and complex wine of incredible intensity. Purple-black to the rim, this wine gives fine aromas of blue-violets, black China tea and ripe red fruit. On the palate, it offers an initial taste of powerful and vigorous fruit, merging into flavours of bitter black chocolate and fine acidity with balanced and mature, but not dry, tannins. The final flavour is clean and perfectly defined. This wine will age well, evolving into a finely balanced and elegant wine in the decades to come.

Reviews:
"Though the nose is very tight, there’s an attractive whiff of violets and black pepper.

Niepoort Port, 2011

BIOMA Vinha Velha Vintage Port - Single Bottle.

Bioma “Vinha Velha”, is a single vineyard Vintage Port from aged vines at Vinha da Pisca (mostly + 80 years old), which is cultivated organically. A hot site, which produces impressive tannins, it formed the backbone of Niepoort Vintage Ports for many years. However, the best parcels were set aside for this wine in 2011, 2009, 2008 and (known then as Pisca) in 2007. Like Niepoort Vintage Port, Bioma was 100% foot trodden with 100% stems. It was then aged in pipes (550 litre)and will be bottled in the third year after the harvest (2014) which, says Niepoort, is what happened in the “old days” when wines were shipped to England in pipes, and bottled later.

Offley Vintage Port, 2011

Vintage Port Single 75cl Bottle

*** 90-92 Points Neil Martin ***

Reviews: " "The Offley Boa Vista Vintage Port comes from selected grapes in the Pinhao area and, of course, the Quinta de Boa Vista. The 2011 is a blend of 45% Touriga Nacional, 45% Touriga Franca and 10% Tinta Roriz, bottled in April. It has a high-toned bouquet with sweet blueberry and cassis aromas - very forward and perhaps not as complex as the Ferreira Vintage at the moment. The palate is actually better than the nose, in particular the fine tannins and the delicate dash of white pepper sprinkled over the finish. The Offley appears to have very impressive balance and after ten minutes in the glass, the nose begins to calm down and develops hints of clove and heather.

Quinta do Noval Nacional, 2011

Vintage Port

"Fantastic: 'The legend lives'... "Could be better than the perfect 1994 and equal to the 1963.”
James Suckling gave the maximum score of 100/100 to the recent Quinta do Noval Vintage Nacional 2011!

“This wine is a mysterious phenomenon, a magical wine produced in extremely limited quantities and only in a few years each decade. It is the expression of a terroir and confirms something that is for me a deeply held belief. The Nacional is great because of the grapes and where they come from, not because of anything particular that we do. It has a unique personality, an extraordinary intensity and, even after many years of ageing, retains an astonishing youthfulness.

Elegant and fragrant aroma, a denoted fresh and fruity nose of raspberry and ripened plum, with a touch of resin and mint. Sandeman Vintage Port, 2011

Vintage Port

"From c. 30 year old block planted vines at Quinta do Vau and Quinta do Seixo (Cima Corgo) this blend comprises 40% Touriga Franca (according to Sottomayer, “the strongest, most structured variety”), 40% Touriga Nacional (“elegance and harmony”), 10% Tinta Roriz, 5% Tinta Cão (“for good acidity”) and 5% Sousão (“to increase colour”). It is a marvellously mineral Port with deep, dark reserves of inky fruit well supported by a charge of sootily fine, schistous tannins. A tightly focused laser beam of blackcurrant and glossier cassis fruit is laced with notes of liquorice and cedar and, as it opens up in the glass, tremendous lift of eucalypt and violets.

Taylor's Port, 2011

Vintage Port MAGNUM

Taylor's Vintage Port is made only in exceptional years, following the rigorous selection and tasting process to meet the requirements for declaration. Historically Taylor's has only declared a maximum of 3 vintages per decade. 2011 has been hailed as a classic vintage by all accounts. Ideal ripening conditions in this year have led Fladgate wine-maker David Guimaraens to conclude that the 2011s 'stand out for the purity of the fruit and the quality of the tannins, which are silky and well integrated but provide plenty of structure. The 2011 vintage is textbook Taylors in its structured aromatics and elegance (according to Fladgate Managing Director Adrian Bridge).

Fonseca Port, 2011

Vintage Port 75cl Bottle

Fonseca declares its vintages only in the most exceptional of years, and in 2011, like many, Fonseca benefitted from a perfect ending to the growing season, ensuring optimum ripeness for their grapes. This allowed deep, powerful and aromatic wines to be made on each of the Fonseca Quintas in the Távora and Pinhão valleys. 2011 has thus given Fonseca another opportunity to express the best characteristics of its vintage port to conoisseurs: its concentration of black fruits, its firm tannic grip, its dense velvety texture and its vibrant aromatics. It bears the promise of many years of development in bottle.

Offley Vintage Port, 2011

Vintage Port (single bottle)

The Offley Porto Vintage 2011 is produced from Quinta da Boavista and other vineyards in the Pinhão area. Sogrape describes it as: "A wine with an extremely intense colour. A deep, almost-opaque, red. Exceptionally rich aromatically. Black fruits of the forest, especially plum, stand out in the nose, with woody notes of pine and cedar, floral tones of rockrose, hints of sous bois, and spices such as cloves and nutmeg. On the palate, an excellent body, well-present acidity, lively yet well-integrated tannins and hints of black forest fruits, again plum, but also cherry. An intense and persistent finish.
