2011 Port Vintage Report
The 2011 Port vintage is hailed as a legendary vintage one of the best in decades. All of the major port houses declared the 2011 Port vintage as being of exceptional quality. The avalanche of declarations started with Sogrape, owners of Sandeman and Ferreira, followed by Symington, the company that owns Dows, Graham, Warre, Smith Woodhouse and Cockburn and then Taylor Fladgate, owners of the Fonseca, Croft and Taylor's brands. According to Charles Symington, "The 2011 Vintage Ports are characterised by an unusual combination of elegance with power and structure. Whereas “elegant” usually implies lighter-bodied, the 2011s have fantastic aromas and great elegance but are big wines - not an easy balance to achieve." These ports would be an excellent 9 year old wine gift for an anniversary this year, reaching their peak between 2020 and 2050, perhaps even onwards.

Ideal ripening conditions in this year have led Fladgate wine-maker David Guimaraens to conclude that the 2011s 'stand out for the purity of the fruit and the quality of the tannins, which are silky and well integrated but provide plenty of structure. The 2011 vintage is textbook Taylors in its structured aromatics and elegance (according to Fladgate Managing Director Adrian Bridge). …

Fonseca Port, 2011
The 2011 Vintage Port Wine from Fonseca has been described as "heady, opulent nose. Completely enveloping, Smells as though there is going to be the most fabulous texture. Wow! All stops pulled out for this one. It's all absolutely gorgeous intensity of sweet fruit on the front palate and then gradually the schist and structure reveal themselves. This is really wonderful stuff. So tempting to sip it decades before it is ready." Jancisrobinson.com

Quinta do Noval Port, 2011
Late Bottled Vintage Port
Quinta do Noval specialize in ports made from grapes they grow themselves – a terroir-driven approach to making a wine for which the norm is to blend grapes grown on different estates. Their unfiltered Late Bottled Vintage Port is exactly that, a wine that shows some of the concentration and fruit flavour of their vintage wine, but has been allowed to mellow in barrels for longer than usual. It was shipped ready to drink, but the lack of filtration makes this a wine that will improve with bottle age
"This wine is a remarkable example of the Noval style. Treated exactly like a Vintage Port with only noble grape varieties from the Quinta, trodden by foot and unfiltered. …
