Taylor's Port, 1970

Vintage Port
Excellent Levels

The 1970 Taylor's Vintage Port is a consistently high performer and rated as one of the best of the 1970 ports.

99 points Wine Enthusiast
This wine's dark garnet color with minimal bricking suggests a relatively youthful wine and this certainly could age longer, although it's also delicious now. Wonderfully complex floral and herbal scents easily move into deep, rich flavors of chocolate and cherries, sprinkled with a healthy dose of Douro minerality and spice. Drink or hold. (JC) (2/2007)

98 points Vinous
The 1970 Taylor's Vintage Port has a tight nose, youthful with notes of liquorice, raisin, boot-polish and lemongrass.

Butler Nephew Vintage Port, 1970

Vintage Port

The 1970 Butler Nephew Vintage is a top quality vintage port produced before the company was purchased by Gonzalas Byas and entered into decline. The wine is dark (60% opaque), light nose of candy and vanilla. Very sweet with a full body and serious backbone. A mixture of black cherries, raisins, dates and licorice on the palate overlaid with a little lavender. The backbone does balances some of the sweetness which leads to a long, long finish. TC (2019).

This House was founded by John Nash in Burmester, Nash & Co in 1730. In 1789 they dissolved partnership and James Butler was taken as partner and the firm became Nach, Butler & Co.

Reviews
A similar russet core, though a little clearer than the ’66. The nose has good definition and focus with an attractive bouquet of cooked meats, mulberry, spice and leather. Light and feminine, although it never really develops the nuance that I was hoping for in the glass. The palate is vigorous, note quite as elegant as the ’66, a little more alcoholic and unrefined, the finish more linear with liquorice, burnt toffee and raisin. Moderate length. Drinking now. Very fine. Neil Martin.

Gould Campbell Vintage Port, 1970

Vintage Port

Medium-deep but, interestingly, with more of a youthful purple tinge than the '75. Very sweet, fruity nose, slightly high-toned, tea-like. Fairly full on the palate, yet lean. Very flavoury. Michael Broadbent

Plenty of stuffing, with layers of elegant berry flavours and silky tannins. Deep ruby-red, with a blackberry and cherry nose, full-bodied, with medium tannins backng up a fine fruit structure, giving the wine an elegant backbone(James Suckling Vintage Year Book.)
