2005 Port Vintage Report

2005-wine-gifts

The 2005 Port Vintage was not widely declared but, nevertheless produced some excellent ports. The big producers did not declare the vintage and concentrated on producing Single Quinta ports from selected vineyards. Some smaller producers did declare 2005. The 2005 vintage ports are already approachable but would benefit from further cellaring.

The Quevedo Vintage Port 2005 is a dark cherry colour. The flavour is of ripe fruit - evocative of black plum and redcurrant. Earthy and well balanced with a touch of dry wood. Some minutes later raspberry and violet flower flavour emerge with a lovely hint of soy. On the palate: balanced and voluminous with very good tannins. Sweet oak combined with dried fruit such as fig, plum or date. Persistent and unique finish.

Barros Port, 2005

Vintage Port, Douro
Includes Barros gift box

The Barros 2005 vintage port has a very solid, vivid crimson colour and a nose that is rather spirity at first, with a fresh, almost herbal edge to bright raspberry and vinous fruit, in a style that immediately suggests this is a lighter, more fresh style of Port. On the palate there is plenty of sweetness, with cassis and ripe, sweet liquidised cherry, but also a touch of raisin and date-like fruit. A certain silky, vanilla and thick plum underpinning emerges into the finish, but so does some quite grippy tannin and again a slightly spiritous edge in a wine that perhaps will become a little more harmonious with time in bottle.

Colheita Port Storage and Serving Advice:
Colheita Port should be stored in a cool and dry place, sheltered from light and temperature fluctuations, and the bottle should remain in an upright position. If stored correctly, Colheita Ports will keep for decades in the bottle. Over time, it is natural that a little sediment will form at the bottom of a bottle of colheita Port wine.
