Kopke

kopke-vintage-portKopke is the oldest Port house and has an enviable reputation for their historic Colheita ports.

In 1636 German diplomat Nicolau Kopkë travelled with his son, Cristiano, from Hamburg to Portugal, representing the Hanseatic League. Two years later, he founded Nicolau Kopkë & Co., a shipping company which would eventually become universally recognised as the first Port House in the industry’s history. In 1781 they bought a farm in the Douro, making the transition from shipper to major producer and gradually making Port Wine their main business focus.

In 1828 C. N. Kopkë, great-great-grandson of Nicolau, sided the company with the Liberal Party during Portugal’s civil war. Following the war, he was awarded the title of Baron of Vilar and a decade later his nephew the title Baron of Massarelos. In 1841 the company’s name was changed to C. N. Kopke and remains such to this day. Almost a century later, in 1940, the House was awarded official recognition as the oldest in the world. Kopke have an excellent reputation backed by many gold medals, particularly for their Tawny (barrel-aged) Ports. Befitting their status as the oldest Port House, their bottles are easily recognisable by their traditional and hand-stencilled style.

Kopke, 1989

Vintage Port
Presented in original Kopke Gift Box

A very rare bottle of Kopke VP. This is one of those noses where you can keep going back and finding things you think it smells like. I really like that. A bit punchy initially with it's alcohol, the finish is where this wine really shines. Starts off as fresh popcorn, turning hazelnuts and honey, then granola and brown sugar..... off into a 40-second long finish with various evolution in which I am sure different people would find different things. Truly delicious. This wine is very, very good. I love it when a wine forces you to think about it, and this does just that. Captivating, complex, intense and delicious.

Reviews:
Dark tawny with orangey-red highlights. I wouldn't quite call it mahogany in colour, but it's close. Very dark, and lots of brown.
Nose: As is typical, lots of (to me) Madeira-like notes. Some leather, some dark aromatic wood like sandalwood, some apricot, and a bit of spirit.

***94 Points- Mark Squires, eRobertParker.com 23 March 2016***

Review:
The 1978 Kopke Colheita Tawny Port was bottled in 2015 with 119 grams per litre of residual sugar and a bar top cork (typical for the house). It is very graceful for its age, finishing with a wave of sweetness, fruit and sugar. Emphasizing the caramel more than the molasses, this is irresistibly delicious, but it becomes more complex and puts on weight as it airs and warms. The wine shows off its power and hints of Brandy on the rather tense finish, too. Overall, this is a beauty that becomes more impressive the longer you sit with it.

The 1957 Colheita Tawny Port was seen before, but it's worth revisiting in the USA, since it's a great wine. This is also the new 2015 bottling. It has 127 grams per litre of residual sugar. It is stunning how youthful this is. Lush and rich on opening, it has mature flavours that emerge, easily demonstrating the complexity and concentrated aromatics one expects. Gripping on the finish, this delivers fruit flavour and seems to linger indefinitely.

1940 Kopke Single Harvest Tawny Port
The year is 1940, we are in the Douro valley,in the ancient Quinta de São Luiz. 1940 was a difficult year, but the quality of the berries suggested a long life for the wines of this harvest.Over the next decades and generations, there were many opportunities and sustained pressure to launch this nectar onto the market. The world changed and societies evolved. Despite all this, this wine was kept for 80 long years in a cellar that resisted time. But all good things come to those who wait. That patience, together with the terroir and the mastery of ageing wines in wood has transformed this wine into a unique experience.
