Croft Port

croft portCroft is one of the most distinguished of all Port houses. Founded in 1588, it is the oldest firm still active today as a Port wine producer.

The company is renowned above all for its Vintage Ports as well as for its range of wood aged reserves and tawnies, time-honoured styles refined by skill and experience passed down the generations.

In spite of its rich heritage and history spanning over four centuries, Croft has never been constrained by tradition. Today, as in the past, it maintains a pioneering spirit, continuing to create innovative new styles such as Croft Pink, the first ever rosé Port.

Behind every great wine producer is a great vineyard. The cornerstone of Croft’s distinctive house style is the famous Quinta da Roêda, described as the jewel of Port wine estates. The wines of this magnificent property, which contains some of the oldest vineyards in the Douro Valley, are the heart of Croft’s Vintage Port blend.

Croft Port, 1960

Vintage Port

"Bright tawny with orange flecks, there are whacks of dried fruit and sultanas on the nose, with hints of bitter chocolate and Christmas pudding. The palate is sweet but balanced with a lovely acidity. A fascinating multilayered wine, with the oxidization bringing out maple syrup flavours, coupled with leather and cigar box aromas wrapped around rich dried fruit. Complex, captivating and holding up beautifully." Decanter, Fine Wine Encounter 2009.

The 1960 has a light russet core with deep tawny rim. A lovely soft, mulberry infused nose with a touch of sloes and coca that could do with a tad more delineation.

430th Anniversary Reserve Ruby Port

Croft has released this special limited edition bottling of Reserve Ruby Port to mark the 430th anniversary of Croft Ports and The Armada year. The special bottle resembles the traditional bottles used for years for Port with a celebration label and gift tube that use Jan Luyken’spainting from the Armada invasion to emphasise Croft’s origins back to 1588.

Dating back to 1588, Henry Thompson founded his label in the midst of the armada, setting up a trading company dealing with wines from Portugal, today known as Croft Port. Celebrating its 430th anniversary, this limited edition ruby port combines a crisp fruity nose with delicate floral notes of rose petal and violet, offset with finishes of strawberry and cherry.

Croft SERIKOS Vintage Port 3 x 75cl
IN BOND En Primeur - AVAILABLE with conditions

18.5/20 Jancis Robinson
First time this wine has been bottled separately as it makes up at least 50% of the Croft blend. The name Serikosrefers to the production of silk on the estate after phylloxera. TourigaNacional, TourigaFrancesa, Tinto Cão, TintaRoriz, TintaBarroca. TA 4.83 g/l, pH 3.82, RS 104 g/l. 2,425 bottles produced.

Dark purple with narrow purple rim. Still packed with fruit but not quite as exuberant as the Croft at this stage. Darker fruited and a touch smoky, rocky. Pure and precise. Gorgeous impression of dryness here, even though of course it is so sweet, the tannins have implausible silky finesse and the whole is in perfect balance.

Croft Port, 1977

Vintage Port

With a red brick colour turning to amber on the rim the 1977 Croft reveals a seductive, ripe and complex nose with undertones of rich jammy and figgy fruit. There is fine caramel and exotic notes of cedar wood and spice. A superb fruit driven Vintage Port, true to the tradition of this ancient Pinhão Valley estate.

A clear claret/garnet core. The nose is ripe and attractive, but lacking the complexity of say, Taylors ’77 for example. Hints of cherry, brambly red-berried fruit, ginger and honey, though improving with time in glass as more blackberry leaf element begin to appear. The palate is sweet,

Croft Port, 1945

Vintage Port - Oporto Bottled - very low level approx 2/3 full - good colour Clearance £150

A much deeper colour than the ’42 as one would expect. Quite limpid for a 62-year old with a lovely, elegant nose of ginger, leather, figs, almond and black cherries in the background. Very refined with a sedate feel to it. The palate is just sublime with perfect acidity, rich and decadent for Croft and in a sense, riper than the ’35 thanks to the Indian summer? Powerful, spicy and almost decadent towards the finish with wild honey, heather, fig, raisin and liquorice. Very long – this ’45 flirts with perfection. A gorgeous ’45 port.
