2013 Port Vintage Report

The 2013 port vintage produced some exceptional wines for those producers who harvested before the rain. For those who managed to gather the grapes, production quantities were tiny. 2013 was marked by a sunny and dry growing season. By the beginning of the harvest the quality potential was outstanding. Periods of rain during the harvest meant that much of this potential was not fully achieved, but some wonderful lots of high quality wine were made.

Burmester Port, 2013

New

Late Bottled Vintage Port

Tasting Note:
The aromas are delicate and varied, with plenty of tropical fruit, berries and grapes fully ripe. In its evolution are noticeable aromas of cocoa, chocolate and a slight toasted wood. The palate is dense and opaque.

Winemaking:
In similar fashion to the Vintage, Late Bottled Vintage is produced in the traditional manner, thus gaining a more rustic and tougher character. It is aged in the Vila Nova de Gaia cellars in enormous oak vats in order to preserve its deep colour and fresh fruit flavours, gaining a closed and fruity character. It is bottled between the fourth and fifth spring after harvest.

Kopke Port, 2013

Late Bottled Vintage Port
Special Offer | Was £24.95 | Now £18.50

Balancing the intensity of flavours, the LBV is the ideal choice to serve with main courses of meat, like filet mignon encrusted four peppers and veal cutlet with Bérnaise sauce. Its versatility knows no borders, being perfect to combine with an exuberant cheesecake of chocolate mint, a pear and chocolate mille-feuille or simply to enjoy with cheeses of medium intensity.

Review:
Opaque and deep ebony colour. The nose is dominated by notes of ripe dark stone fruit and hints of cacao and chocolate, already showing the signs of some cask ageing. The mouth is full bodied and tight showing good acidity, fresh tannins as well as a long rich finish.

BIOMA Vinha Velha Vintage Port - Single Bottle 75cl

Bioma “Vinha Velha”, is a single vineyard Vintage Port from aged vines at Vinha da Pisca (mostly + 80 years old), which is cultivated organically. A hot site, which produces impressive tannins, it formed the backbone of Niepoort Vintage Ports for many years. However, the best parcels were set aside for this wine in 2013, 2011, 2009, 2008 and (known then as Pisca) in 2007. Like Niepoort Vintage Port, Bioma was 100% foot trodden with 100% stems. It was then aged in pipes (550 litre)and will be bottled in the third year after the harvest (2016) which, says Niepoort, is what happened in the “old days” when wines were shipped to England in pipes, and bottled later.

Sandeman Vintage Port, 2013

Late Bottled Vintage Port

The 2013 Sandeman LBV is a full and fruity late bottled vintage. On the nose, the wine is intense and complex with aromas of balsamic, rose, basil, red and black fruits, as well as spicy notes of black pepper. On the palate, this wine has a lively acidity and robust tannins, complemented by an incredibly balanced finish.

Sandeman LBV was produced by the traditional Port method, with a long, intense maceration during alcoholic fermentation with the aim of extracting tannin, colour and flavour from the skins. This was done both by foot-treading in traditional granite lagars (shallow vats), and by pumping over.
