2015 Port Vintage Report

2015-vintage-port

The 2015 Vintage Port Harvest

Abundant rainfall marked the start of the viticultural year, replenishing depleted soil water reserves. This was to prove crucial due to the very dry winter, spring and summer that followed which was the hottest and driest of the last 36 years. It was the hottest June of the last half-century resulting in exceptionally low yields at harvest time. The conditions leading up to the harvest were excellent and a little late rain followed by sunshine just before picking offset some of the heat stress to produce some of the best grapes in memory (particularly Touriga Franca)

To declare or not to declare?

The ports produced in the 2015 vintage are, without doubt, outstanding and many producers such as Niepoort, Noval Ramos Pinto have declared the vintage. With small productions and an eye to what will probably be a spectacular 2016 vintage, Taylor Fladgate and Symington’s have not declared all of their range producing instead some amazing value single quintas. These companies never make back-to-back declarations. Symingtons have produces a very small quantity of the ultra-rare Graham's Stone Terraces and declared Cockburn to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the shipper.

Our assessment.
Having tasted all of the 2015 ports below, our port expert, Dr Tony Carter, has scored all of them above 90 points (outstanding) and rated the Stone Terrace, Dows and Vesuvio in the exceptional category (95+ points). This is in line with other critical reviews. In general, the exceptional showing for the Touriga Franca adds amazing floral qualities across the board. This is supported by a good showing for the Touriga Nacional which adds structure and backbone great ageing potential for these wines. We look forward to revisiting them in 40 years time!

2015 is definitely a vintage for port drinkers. Apart from the rare and limited releases, investors should look towards the 2016 vintage. Port drinkers can find amazing value amongst the single quintas (Fonseca, Taylor's, Croft, Dow's) or pick up some excellent quality vintage ports.

Graham's - "The Stone Terraces", 2015

Vintage Port, CASE OF 3 x 75cl bottles

***93 Points- James Suckling***
This is a single vineyard port from the farm of Quinta do Malvedos. Smells like ink with a dark and earth aroma. Spicy. Dried flowers. Full and rich with a slightly drier edge to this. Nice finish with dusty tannins. A beauty already with only 400 cases made. This really grows on you. Long finish. Drink from 2023 onward. *James Suckling*

Sublime floral essence; bouquet of roses and violets – gorgeous. Discreet hint of toffee. Exudes finesse. Superb opulence on the palate, whilst not overbearing. Reveals a palate of riches with mineral freshness and some peppery spice.

THE STONE TERRACES, Vintage Port
Single bottle presented in a wooden box

The Symington family is pleased to announce a limited release of 400 cases of Vintage Port from its Stone Terraces vineyards, which occupy just 2.9 hectares of its iconic Quinta dos Malvedos, of which the total area under vine is 90 hectares. Acquired in 1890, this property is acknowledged to be in one of the Upper Douro Valley’s most favourable sites. It has been the source of some of the greatest Vintage Ports ever made.
The Stone Terraces vineyard at Quinta dos Malvedos produced an extraordinary wine in 2015. The grapes were picked by hand over the weekend of the 12th/13th of September, a couple of days before substantial rain fell across the Douro Valley, and were subsequently fermented in lagares at the estate’s own small winery.

Niepoort Port, 2015

BIOMA Vinha Velha Vintage Port, 1x37.5cl- Half bottle.

Bioma “Vinha Velha”, is a single vineyard Vintage Port from aged vines at Vinha da Pisca (mostly + 80 years old), which is cultivated organically. A hot site, which produces impressive tannins, it formed the backbone of Niepoort Vintage Ports for many years. However, the best parcels were set aside for this wine in 2013, 2011, 2009, 2008 and (known then as Pisca) in 2007. Like Niepoort Vintage Port, Bioma was 100% foot trodden with 100% stems. It was then aged in pipes (550 litre)and will be bottled in the third year after the harvest (2018) which, says Niepoort, is what happened in the “old days” when wines were shipped to England in pipes, and bottled later.

A vibrant Port in colour and on the palate with lovely florality – violets – and black pepper lift to its well defined its sweet, ripe, juicy and intense swathes of berry and plum fruit. Long and persistent with a ripe but palpable chassis of tannins. Already so charming and elegant such is its exquisite balance – built for the long haul.
